When your Heating and Cooling system fails, what do you do?
We're going to discuss a few things that you can check yourself when your heat system or cooling system fails. You can check some very basic items before you call an expert. This could save you time and money.
Check the Thermostat
Often times we find that the thermostat is either set to off or in the wrong mode. Double check to make sure that the system is set to heat or cool, whichever you desire and make sure that the temperature is set beyond the set point. For instance. If heat is desired, you will want to make sure that the temperature on the thermostat is set higher than the room temperature. If you desire cooling, then it's the opposite, set the temperature lower than the room temperature. Once you are sure that you have the thermostat set properly you can move to the next item.
Check for Power
First do you hear the appliance or fan running? If so, then you have power to the unit. If not you should continue your checks. Do any of the other appliances in the house have power. If so the you can check the power breakers (there can be breakers at the main electrical box as well as the unit itself). Reset all the breakers to be sure that they are not tripped. If you unit restarts, then congrats, you got yourself back up and running. If not, let's move on to the next item.
No AC or heat
For gas, make sure you have gas to the unit. For electric, make sure that you have electricity to the unit. If power is present then check the condenser unit to see if it's frozen over. If the unit is frozen, you should leave the unit off until the ice clears from the unit. Also make sure that the condensate drain is clear. If the condensate drain is plugged and the condensate pan is full of water the unit will not run.
